A vanilla PvP guide. This guide was made while Terraria was in version 1.3.5.3 and may be subject to change. Created to expose regulars to the competitive player versus player scene in great detail. NOT for servers with modified weapons with their own metas that are managed by their server staff.
Armor and accessory builds still apply to those servers in spite of this, though. Made for 'civil' play that works with weapons that aren't usually banned on servers. Please voice any issues you have with understanding the material in this guide or any standpoints you hold or would like to discuss in the comment section, we'll get back to you when we can. Credit goes to those in the community that put this information out on the web for those to view at their own leisure. All data and pictures come from theterraria.gamepedia.com. NOTICE This section has nothing to do with PvP, this is just to provide a little story to encourage players to read on. Please completely disregard this section if you're only looking for informationWelcome to the world of Terraria!
Dig, fight, build - you can pretty much do anything you want to in this wondrous game. You decide to do a casual play-through of the game just to get a feel of how to play and have a little fun in the process. Fast forward a bit and you're done with the Single Player scene of Terraria.
'Champion of Terraria', 'Slayer of Worlds', all these titles under your belt and you're now in the state of withdrawal. You're bored.
You've done everything there is to do and now everything is easy for you. You decide to try out playing on a high end, non-server-sided-character server to boast your arsenal and make some friends. You've now joined said server and are silently welcomed by the community of fellow, most likely blissfully ignorant, players. All of them are playing on the server for different reasons. So what exactly do you do?
You look around and glance at the chat and notice that there are some players fighting - literally. Not in an argument, but in a player-versus-player, free-for-all battle. You enter the area where the others are PvP'ing and begin to duel among them. Within seconds, however, you've unfortunately met your demise. You've just been destroyed by an 'elitist' that's going 70 MPH in-game in seconds and you don't know how to react.
They came at you so fast with some hook and a slime mount, how is this possible? They shot then chopped you into pieces, leaving your ego in shambles. Surely this was just bad luck? You try again. Same outcome. Again and again and again. You can't seem to leave even a scratch on their health bar.
Instead of becoming enraged, salt coursing your veins, you're intrigued. Rather, you're fascinated at how someone could play such a simple game in that way. However, being new and shy, you shrug it off, leave, and let your imagination do the work for you. Time passes and your curiosity is piqued after you've given it some thought.
You decide to do some non-social/communicative research and eventually come across this guide and are now currently reading it. Well, Terrarian, let's get down to the basics of being a competitive Terraria PvP'er! Let's get down to business. Okay so, throw almost everything you know about Terraria PvP out the window - leave your knowledge of the subject completely blank. This will help you better understand the content soon to be uncovered in this guide. First, choose a server to PvP on from the terraria-servers.comMake sure that the server is VANILLA hence those are what we're discussing. Not that custom meta servers are bad to PvP on, per se - it's just that those servers would require entirely different guides to go over their respective and ever-changing metas.
Frankly, they're just too hard to keep up with anyway. I apologize.Your first server choice will not matter in the slightest in the long run as you will most likely have to server hop to constantly have the opportunity to battle other players. Keep in mind, sometimes all of the Terraria servers go completely dead and you're left to wallow in a ditch. Don't let this keep you down, try again later. You're also going to need a name for yourself. Come up with one and pray it hasn't been taken.
With that out of the way, let's get you prepared. Terraria PvP's mechanics are almost completely different from that of the player-versus-environment's mechanics. In this section, we'll be going over what works in PvP and what doesn't. This section will not cover things such as defense or attack speed because those are applied to the regular game. Critical Hits: Critical hits do NOT work on other players in PvP, as you may already know. It's utterly useless to run a 'Critical Strike Chance' build in the world of PvP.
This means avoid accessory modifiers such as, 'Precise', and 'Lucky.' . Modifiers: You can edit in unobtainable modifiers with server commands. Since you will most likely always be playing on a non-sever-sided-character (NSSC) server, you will probably have access to the console command, '/i' The syntax for this command is '/i ' Please note that you'll have to use quotation marks if the item has a number in it's name, etc. EX: '/i Daybreak 1 Unreal', '/i Solar Flare Helmet 1 Menacing' As shown, this also goes for armor and even mounts and hooks. While this is considered unethical by some and outright banned on a few select servers, I personally see no problem with this.
However, if your opponent requests you to not use those things, either lie or agree to do so.The following is a sub-bulletin of the best modifiers to use on certain items. Unreal: Use on almost all melee and ranged weapons and in some cases, magic weapons. Not recommended to use on sword like weapons because the velocity difference is negligible and almost unnoticeable. Legendary: The poster-child modifier of the swords.
The modifier is meant for swords so it should only stay on swords. Catch my drift?. Mythical: The best magic modifier for most magic weapons. If your weapon can have this modifier, use it.
Ruthless: The modifier to use for summoner weapons. For PvP's sake, this applies to sentry weapons such as the terraria.gamepedia.com and the terraria.gamepedia.com which do contact damage to players. Demonic: For weapons that can't be enchanted with Mythical or Ruthless.
Rapid: Use this modifier on all mounts and items such as Magic Mirror and Rod of Discord. Intimidating: Used on hooks such as Bat Hook and Anti-Grav Hook. Doesn't make a difference but it's the only modifier that 'increases' the velocity of hooks. You can find a full list of all the modifiers terraria.gamepedia.com. Homing: Projectiles that have homing attributes such as ' terraria.gamepedia.com' and ' terraria.gamepedia.com' will NOT track players at all. However, even when PvP is enabled, these projectiles will still track to mobs.
So mind your use of weapons like those whenever mobs are allowed to spawn. This should not be a problem on most servers but could still happen. Debuffs: Debuffs applied by things such as the terraria.gamepedia.com, terraria.gamepedia.com, or any of the Weapon Imbue Flasks will NOT be applied to players. This does not apply to inherited debuff properties like with terraria.gamepedia.com and ' terraria.gamepedia.com', which still works on players, but weapons like the terraria.gamepedia.com or terraria.gamepedia.com do not apply their debuffs to players because they only work on enemies. Even though the debuff animation shows on the player you struck, that is simply just a visual bug. Invincibility Frames: There is a period of time after you're hit that makes you invulnerable to other attacks. This makes the game a hell of a lot easier.
The regular amount of time for the period is 2/3 seconds (.66s) and 1 1/3 seconds (1.33s) when affected by derivatives such as the terraria.gamepedia.com This has been proven, the effects of Cross Necklace in PvP, despite the community's consensus, to be true. Proof can be found in the coded invincibility frames. Sliming, Grappling, and Cart Dashingterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comSlimy Saddle and Bat Hook are the best things in Terraria PvP and will either make or break your performance in this gamemode. More on Cart Dashing later. Using these at the right time and in the right place is HUGE. Through these items, you will be able to go as fast as possible in the game without any setup.
However, going as fast as possible all the time is not recommended if you ever want to reach full potential. Pace yourself and go fast when you need to escape or close the gap and rush your opponent with a spam weapon like Terra Blade. Otherwise, slow down and take your shots with care and grace. Spamming Slimy Saddle in general is considered toxic, try and avoid to do this unless you're fighting someone that overly relies upon aiming with a weapon like the Sniper Rifle. As for Cart Dashing, as the name implies, just dash into a Minecart Track Rail and hit your mount key. This can also be done in reverse, same as before, just hit the other key, A or D, when you dash and mount which will send you back the direction you came from.
Follow the movement section below for more details and visuals.PS: Slimy Saddle may be banned on some servers. The likely hood of it being banned is extremely low, though. Also, some servers may not even have Cart Dash Rails or any rails at all. Healingterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comEither one of these two accessories, one or the other, is a necessity to anyone that wants to stay alive in general and go on high streaks. I strongly recommend you choose Charm of Myths over Philosopher's Stone, but if Charm interferes with your vanity, use Philosopher's Stone.
These accessories are swap accessories meaning that you'll need to open up your inventory, mid-battle, and right click the accessory, in this case, heal, then, swap it back. These accessories decrease the amount of time Potion Sickness runs out by 15 seconds from 60 seconds which makes it only last 45 seconds. From someone experienced with, 'charm swapping', I can firmly argue that those 15 seconds are crucial.
To put it simply, 60 seconds feels like a lot for some reason in a match but 45 seconds feels like a snap of the fingers, like it's back in an instant. It's insane, really.
It is best to keep one of them in a vanity slot, so you can quickly swap to it to heal, then swap back.terraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comThe armor pieces do not require a table to explain stats and defense since they're only used for one thing. Healing, of course.
Whenever you need to heal and you still have Potion Sickness, run away and equip this Healing Armor and swap to Shiny Stone, if those things aren't banned. It's not endorsed, but you can still do it. That is, if you don't mind being made fun of if they catch you.
Increased night visionI highly recommend that at some point in your 'career' that you try out Featherfall. It may seem completely useless to you when you first try it out, and trust me, we've all thought that at some point, but this potion will allow you to go way faster and will grow on you until it becomes habit to press down and up. As for the other buffs, you should definitely use them if they complement at least the smallest part of your build. However, please note that stacking too many buffs will cause the game to take you off of your mount whenever you mount if you've reached the buff limit. This happens because mounts count as buffs in this game.
This is also the reason why you shouldn't run any sort of pet at all when PvP'ing. 8% increased ranged damage and critical strike chance, 10% increased movement speedAs you may have noticed, if you bothered to check, that is, all of these armor pieces have the exact same defense stats as all of the pieces from the Solar Flare set. Unsurprisingly, this was intended. This armor combo is meant to challenge the Solar Flare set in a new way due to its higher stat increases. This combo is for those that feel that the damage reduction from the Solar Flare set doesn't work or for those whom prefer meta-supporting stats over 'a little damage reduction.'
I personally recommend this build over all of the other mixed kits.Pseudo Mixed Sniper Buildterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.com. 15% increased movement and melee speed; Enemies are more likely to target youThis build is for those that play defensively and still want to play around mostly range and melee damage but prefer range over melee and don't mind the very noticeable defense drop. Pairs extremely well with the Sniper Rifle, pushes it's damage a little over 400 for anyone with the correct build. Favors an adaptive play-style, play around people and catch them off guard, and you will be greatly rewarded.
Not the best, but still usable.Warrior of Wizardryterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.com. 8% increased ranged damage and critical strike chance, 10% increased movement speed'Wait. Why is that combination above Vortex?' , you may query. Well, my friend, even if going into stealth mode makes your ranged damage increase dramatically, it doesn't make up for the fact that it will also greatly decrease your horizontal velocity, thus turning you into an easy target. So this combination of armor is the most optimal for PvP for the Ranger class.
Nevertheless, the Vortex armor set will still be listed as it can still be used effectively, figuratively, by toggling at the right moment and not permanently staying in stealth.terraria.gamepedia.com. 10% increased magic damage, 10% increased movement speedIf you want to go full Mage, there's no compromise to defense.
You have to go all or nothing with damage otherwise, all of the other classes will outshine you in all aspects. Mages are meant to be annoying glass-cannons that deal a high amount of damage in short bursts. The class complements a defensive play-style and will reward you if you abuse coverage and always run-away from danger. Sometimes, pushing a little bit with a Nebula Blaze is fine, but always remember, you're the glass cannon, and your opponent is a hammer.
The concept of going fully Warrior is not really recommended, but you can still do it. The max melee speed build will be included just for reassurance but it is NOT AT ALL recommended that you even consider using the build at all outside of tests or when you want to be gimmicky and have a little fun. Also, I apologize, but I won't be offering any insight on any of these builds this time hence I feel that it's not really necessary as I believe they are rather self-explanatory.Max Melee Damage Kitterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.comterraria.gamepedia.com.
20% increased minion damage, critical strike chance and 30% movement speedSet BonusIncreases your max number of sentries; Greatly enhances Ballista effectiveness.Regardless of what the title of this section implies, most of the actual Summoner staffs and their respective summons, not counting sentries, do not do damage to players at all in PvP. With the rare exception of a few staffs such as Stardust Dragon Staff, Tempest Staff, Raven Staff, etc., the lackluster AI (Artificial Intelligence) of the summons are not reliable enough to render you to use them at all in PvP against players as your main source of damage. Instead, you pretty much have to use sentry weapons exclusively. The best include Rainbow Crystal Staff, Ballista Staff, and Staff of the Frost Hydra. While others can be chosen, these are the best of the best and the most reliable. Sentries can be used in PvP by clicking on the area a player is/will go, thus doing contact damage to the players without you having to really aim.
Keep in mind, you're going to have to predict where they're going to move next, though. Staffs such as Ballista Staff and Staff of the Frost Hydra are mostly used to trap the ground and limit other players' movement/area of play as they cannot hover, remember that. Valhalla Knight armor was chosen over Stardust because it pretty much has over double the overall defense value of Stardust, it increases the amount of sentries that you can have out at once, and it provides great life regeneration without having to swap to healing armor which is great as you, as a Summoner, will be able to almost entirely play behind walls/cover because you never really have to be in the open-lines-of-sight of a player. Not to mention, the armor also gives you a nominal increase to your movement speed. Even though Stardust gives you a 6% damage increase, it's not worth using at all in PvP. Hug cover and play at long distance.
Never really rush if you only have Summoner weapons, which isn't recommended, by the way, be conservative, and occasionally, when able, play like a vulture picking off the dead meat of another animal's left overs, i.e., clean up kills. 6% increased movement and melee speed; Enemies are more likely to target youSet BonusBeetle Endurance: Damage taken reduced by 15%/30%/45%'But wait? Why would Beetle be put above Solar?' Well, you see, as Sniper Rifle and Daybreak are so prevalent in the meta, the extra 15% damage reduction 3 Beetles give you over the 30% Solar gives you FAR outclasses any defense or damage boosts any other armor gives. This is especially great against Vortex Snipers, as your Beetle Endurance has greater returns than their damage boosts.
Furthermore, with Endurance Potion and Worm Scarf, your endurance becomes phenomenal, which greatly increases your survivability. Due to most weapons in the meta being high damage attacks, Beetle Endurance is just too good, even if you're running a melee kit. The only reason you would run Solar over Beetle is if your opponent prefers to use rapid hit weapons such as Vortex Beater, S.D.M.G, Scourge of the Corrupter, Chain Gun, etc.terraria.gamepedia.com. 15% increased movement and melee speed; Enemies are more likely to target youSet BonusSolar Blaze: Solar shields generate over time protecting you, consume the shield power to dash, damaging enemies.Your basic, run-of-the-mill PvP armor set that works with any class, the only set that you should really use in all level of play unless you can optimally stay at a long distance.
Literally everyone and their mother uses this due to it's helpful stats, high defense, and extremely useful and versatile set bonus. Sure, it doesn't give you the highest stats you can have, but the money is in the set bonus. Free 30% damage reduction for 3 hits is HUGE. However, please note that damage reduction is still being debated upon it's usefulness hence it's only really noticeable client side and not for others that attack you.
Use this armor set if you're just starting out or if you're PvP'ing semi-casually. Always fall back to this armor if you have trouble using other armor builds.
Alternative Accessoriesterraria.gamepedia.comFrozen Turtle Shell is extremely good. So good that it's not recommended to use the accessory in the first place. But, if you don't care about it and it's not banned, keep it in one of your vanity slots and swap it in place of Celestial Stone or whatever accessory you choose when your HP is below 50% (300 HP remaining with Lifeforce) by right-clicking it.terraria.gamepedia.comPlease, for the love of God, if you show any respect towards your opponent WHAT SO EVER do NOT use Master Ninja Gear. MNG is completely broken - a free fully-damage-negated dodge that gives you invincibility frames like it's PvE (player-versus-environment) is just down right busted and over-powered. Pardon my tone.
I'm not one to complain, though, use whatever you want, it's fine as long as you're having fun.terraria.gamepedia.comKind of like MNG without the RNG (Random Number Generator). Still equally as broken though as it also extends your invincibility frames.terraria.gamepedia.comFeatherfall but as an accessory. Excellent if you're trying to get use to the feel of Featherfall, kind of like training wheels.terraria.gamepedia.comIf you want to have extra melee buffs at night thanks to the Werewolf buff, use this accessory. If you don't mind being stupidly slow and vulnerable in any sort of liquid thanks to the Merfolk buff, use this accessory.
If there's no liquid at all or if you avoid the liquid entirely, use this accessory.terraria.gamepedia.comANDterraria.gamepedia.comKeep one or the other in one of your vanity slots and the other as an accessory in the slot parallel to the one in your vanity slot. Swap between the two by right-clicking the one in the vanity slot for their respective times.
Used in full-spec'd damage builds. Shoots a powerful, high velocity bulletRight click to zoom outThe Sniper Rifle. The bread and butter of vanilla Terraria PvP. A highly skill-based, aim-based, gun that rewards accuracy with amazing damage.
If you can hit people with this thing consistently, you will most likely always win your duel. High risk, high reward, hit with this and feel the bliss.
As for ammo, the best bullets are without a doubt High Velocity, as they are the fastest, and thus the most consistent. However, Luminite Bullets are viable as well, and if you can aim them just as well, it is definitely worth trying out.terraria.gamepedia.com.
9Blizzard Staff is the best weapon for covering a large amount of area with as many projectiles as possible. You're pretty much always guaranteed to hit someone with this staff whenever you use it. However, this is not it's only purpose. Blizzard Staff is amazing at getting rid of Endurance set bonus buffs such as Solar Blaze and Beetle Endurance. While there are other weapons that do this job much better, the overall utility of this magic weapon is greater.
I strongly recommend you put this in almost all of your loadouts.terraria.gamepedia.com. 10A pretty great weapon to use as an alternative to most weapons here. Tsunami is reliable, punishing, and worth a slot if you can't choose between the weapons listed. It may sound like I'm underselling this zealous weapon, but it's seriously worth a try. Pairing this weapon with Luminite Arrows is recommended, the after-image of arrows is excellent for catching people off-guard and for pushing people away from yourself. You could also use Holy Arrows to cover an immense amount of area, but it's not really civil if you choose to pair this bow with those arrows.terraria.gamepedia.com.
Summons a radiant crystal that banishes your enemies down.' The colors, Duke, the colors!' Rainbow Crystal Staff is often banned on servers due to how over-powered this thing is. If you didn't already know, sentry weapons do contact damage to players when they run into them and this particular sentry floats in the air. It's hands down the best vanilla PvP weapon. It can go any where, it hits like a truck, you don't have to aim with it, and it's phenomenally easy to abuse behind cover where others either can't hit you, or won't do any considerable damage. Not very 'civil', but this thing is just too good not to mention.
If you can use this and you don't mind being literal human trash, pick this thing up and enjoy your free wins. For a different opinion from someone more renowned in the PvP community, check out the 'Terraria Weapon PvP Tiers List' on the Terraria Community Forums forums.terraria.org.
